THE COMPANY
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is a wholly-owned Indian subsidiary of Honda Motor Company, Limited, Japan. It was set up in 1999 at Manesar near Gurgaon in Haryana. The foundation stone for the company’s factory was laid on December 14, 1999 and the factory was completed in January 2001. HMSI got ISO 14001 certification in December 2002.
THE HISTORY
The parent company, Honda Motor Company, was founded in Japan by Soichiro Honda in 1948. Headquartered in Tokyo, it has manufacturing operations in 32 countries with 109 production bases. The company principle of Honda Worldwide is supplying products of the highest quality at a reasonable price. It has three business divisions - two-wheelers, four-wheelers and power products.
In 1984, Honda had formed two JVs in India - one was to manufacture motorcycles with the Hero Group and the other was with Kinetic to manufacture scooters. Honda sold its stake in Kinetic Honda in 1997, and about a year later, decided to set up its own scooter manufacturing subsidiary, HMSI. Honda’s split with Hero happened in 2011.
Honda’s other business divisions in India include Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL) and Honda Siel Power Products Limited (HSPP).
THE REACH
HMSI has acquired over 15 million happy customers in its 13th year of operations and is today the No. 2 and fastest growing two-wheeler company in India. It has three manufacturing plants at Manesar (Haryana), Tapukara (Rajasthan) and Narsapuram (Dist. Kolar, Karnataka) with a cumulative production capacity of 40 lakh units annually. At the Auto Expo 2014, HMSI announced that it will invest about Rs 1,100 crore to set up its fourth facility in Ahmedabad to manufacture scooters. An additional six lakh unit capacity expansion announced at the third plant is slated to take production capacity to 46 lakh units by FY14 end. The company aims to add 500 new touch-points and take its growing network to over 2500 by the end of FY14.
THE ACTIVITIES
Honda has been expanding fun initiatives like the Honda One Make Race, Gymkhana, Asia Dream Cup and the unique Honda Riding Training by Moto GP riders from Japan. It has also been conducting safety riding activities for women, CRF 50 and primary training for kids and has set up riding trainer simulators at dealerships. HMSI has two Traffic Training parks in Delhi and Jaipur and has trained more than four lakh individuals till date.
THE PRODUCTS
Two-wheelers sold by HMSI include the Aviator, Activa, Dio, Unicorn, Shine, CBF125 Stunner, CB Twister, Dream Yuga, CBR250R, CBR150R, Activa i, CB Shine, Dream NEO and CB Trigger.
