Convention can’t really be deemed as the advertising industry’s forte. In the last three years that I’ve attended Goafest - this being the fourth - each time there’s been an attempt to stretch boundaries and go beyond the limits, to be different. With this consistent train of thought, naturally no one expected any less from this year’s Goafest. So what did we expect? Some controversies. Lots of learning.
Something unconventional, something that would have a lasting impact on us. Something (apart from those hangovers) to take home. Something unexpected, is always expected, if you will.
This year, however, the theme itself was ‘Just what you unexpected’ – you may wonder what exactly does this mean? As stated before, something unique and unexpected is expected every year. So this time, what were we expecting? Something conventional? That would be truly unexpected. Why bore people with what’s expected when it’s unexpected? There’s no fun in that. Or maybe... maybe... that’s just it! As the theme is unexpected, you expect the expected. But now, because it is expected to be expected, the best thing to do to be unexpected is NOT to be expected and thereby be unexpected! Though, then, wouldn’t that make it expected...? This way the cycle can go on and on and on forever.
Apart from the ‘unexpected’, what I’m sure we gained from these two days is lots of fun, lots of people, some in the seminars and many outside, close competition, exciting winners, sore losers and a sprinkle of controversy here and there. Generally, just a great time. So kick back, relax and wait for another Goafest.
