So now I am an entrepreneur, the word has settled nicely, my company named, service tax and professional tax documents done, bank account opened, am ready…
Rush, excitement, calls, mails, meetings, long days and nights that merge into each other, 5.30 am starts, working from home… this is what I had prepared myself for. Most days start at my laptop between 6 and 7 am, I enjoy Sunday working too… as it is no longer working, it’s my new life. (Working was getting dressed to go to an office and having to do what was required to be done).
Many of my weekdays include: 7.15 am long morning walk or 8.15 am Zumba class or a noon swim in the sun or tea at the club lawns at 5.30pm, things I only dreamt of in my working life.
The process person that I am, I’ve started doing weekly reports to myself on my four projects, often I update these reports daily, this has helped me immensely.
I always credited myself with great time management and organizing skills, but boy, was I put to my worst/best test! An example: Once after a meeting, it took me six days to send an e-mail to the client with discussion points, my norm is 24 hours (point to note: that week I did 26 meetings)!
I was scared to work from home, but if you are disciplined, home’s the best place to work from. The energy is right, food’s the best. My car is my second office and I spend more time with my driver of over seven years than I ever did. He is chipping in too, doing all my errands photocopy, courier, etc., even he’s saving money these days… he refuses to pay parking fees, he parks out and fetches me when I am done… he has turned entrepreneur too!
On the work front, rigorous follow-ups have always been my mantra. Thank God I invested in my relationships, most clients and agencies are taking my call, meeting me and showing the same warmth as they always did. This is a great impetus for a start-up and feeds me with the energy I so need, as I have to stay centred and positive and have only myself to prep up each morning. (Here, meditation has helped me a lot...) I have got what I wanted, freedom to do it my way…
