Indian summer in France

The number of entries was the highest ever. The number of wins has crept past last year’s disappointing total. Cannes lions has been a good showing for india, this year.

If it’s the French Riviera, there must be wine. And India has good cause to uncork the bubbly this year at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, having won 23 metals in the total 13 categories, for which 1,177 entries had been sent – the seventh highest number of entries.

In the biggest event of the advertising world, India has bagged three Golds, 10 Silvers and ten Bronze Lions. After last year’s drop to 17 metals from an otherwise aggressive growing curve, with 25 the year before, the sun is shining again on Indian advertising.

Initially, when India failed to find a place in the Direct and Cyber shortlist, many thought it would be a repeat of 2010. However, the two Gold Lions and other wins lifted the spirits at the gutter bar.

Mudra Communications, which leads the Indian tally with the maximum number of shortlists and points, has put its counterparts to shame. Most of Mudra’s wins are for Silent Anthem, the agency’s short film for Big Cinemas which became a runaway viral hit. But the major highlight of this year wins was a Gold Lion won by dark horse Out of the Box. This Delhi-based agency won the award for its work for Mother’s Pride/ Marvel Group of Companies.

The other agencies which won the Lion for India are BBDO India, McCann World group, Lodestar, Taproot India, Maxus, to name a few. The biggies like JWT, Grey Worldwide India, Leo Burnett and Ogilvy & Mather had a poor run at the festival. Categories which saw the maximum Indian wins were Outdoor, Design and Press.
